Maricris and her Nostalgia About Life in the Philippines Interviewed by: Imelda Vela


INTRODUCTION

Maricris Vitug, came to the United States of America in 1999 with her family at a fairly young age.Opposite from being young who can  feed off the sense of excitement that builds with any big move, Maricris did not want to migrate with her family but decided to move anyway.  Her nostalgia about life in the Philippines unfold.

Maricris grew up in the Philippines and for her it had become a second nature almost to have a family always around to help in any which way from the most simple to big life changing decisions.






Maricris talks about the dilemma of leaving the homeland in pursue of the American Dreams!







Flight: Manila-SanFrancisco, Maricris recalls the night at the airport.  It was her first time leaving the Philippines and was the last time seeing her mother.







According to Maricris, the saying "First Impression can be deceiving" and "Reality Bites" holds true as she tell the story of her impression about United States versus her first day in the U.S

Maricris would think of a song "Wiz" that has line that says "When I think of Home, I think of a place where there is love overflowing."  She has always considered this line to describe how she feels about the Philippines.  The thoughts of time spent and growing up , family and friends crowded around dinner table, special holidays, these thoughts of good times, laughter and love are what makes her miss her family back home.


 






Maricris talks about the complete immersion to English language as her biggest adjustment in migrating to the U.S.

 





Philippines will always be a "Home" for Maricris but will always be grateful with all the opportunities she had living in the U.S.







Maricris discussed about her sentiments about the time spent in the past with family in the Philippines and the unbridgeable distance of it from the possibility of actually going back home.
